Overview

If you can only fit one desert evening into your Marrakech stay, this combination covers the lot. The Agafay lies about 40 km south-west of the city, a stony plateau of rolling ochre hills where the High Atlas fills the skyline and Lalla Takerkoust lake shines far below. It is not a sea of sand dunes, but the open tracks are ideal for riding and the views at dusk are wide and calm.

Once our driver has collected you and you have had a glass of mint tea at the camp, you are fitted with a helmet and given a short safety talk. No previous experience is needed: a guide rides in front for around an hour of quad biking along the desert trails, with stops for photos. Next you swap the engine for a camel and spend about 30 minutes rocking gently over the hills as the sun goes down.

The evening continues at the camp with a Moroccan dinner of salads, a tagine and fruit or pastries, followed by a fireside show of Moroccan and Berber music, drums and folk dancing. Vegetarian meals are available on request when you book. Our team then drives you back to your hotel or riad in Marrakech.

Prefer something calmer? Morocco Adventure Travel also runs a camel-only sunset evening and a quad-only version of this dinner and show.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    14:30 · Pick-up in Marrakech

Our driver meets you at your hotel or riad in an air-conditioned vehicle. If your riad is in a car-free part of the medina, we wait at the nearest square or gate and confirm the meeting point on WhatsApp. The pick-up time is adjusted to the sunset of the season, then you drive out across the plain towards the Agafay plateau.

  2. 2

15:15 · Welcome tea and quad ride

At the camp you are greeted with mint tea before receiving a helmet and a clear safety briefing on how the quad works. From around 15:30 you follow your guide for about an hour along the desert tracks, over gentle hills and across open flats, with photo stops along the way. Beginners pick it up quickly, and younger children can ride as passengers with an adult.

  3. 3

16:45 · Camel ride at sunset

With the quads parked, the camel handlers lead you out on a ride of roughly 30 minutes over the hills. The slower rhythm is a nice contrast after the engines, and it is timed so that you are on the move as the light turns golden and the shadows stretch across the plateau. It is the best time of the day for photos of the Atlas skyline.

  4. 4

18:00 · Moroccan dinner at camp

As darkness settles, dinner is served at the camp: a selection of Moroccan salads to start, a tagine cooked slowly over the coals, and fruit or pastries to finish, with water included. Let us know in advance if you need a vegetarian meal. Evenings in the desert cool down quickly, so this is the moment you will be glad you packed a jacket.

  5. 5

19:15 · Fireside music and dance

The musicians gather by the campfire for a lively show of Moroccan and Berber rhythms, with drums, traditional songs and folk dancing. The atmosphere is informal and guests are often pulled into the circle to try a few steps. It is a fun way to round off an active evening before the drive home, especially for families travelling with older children.

  6. 6

    20:30 · Return to Marrakech

After the show you board the vehicle for the return trip across the plain. The drive takes about 45 minutes and you are dropped back at your hotel or riad at around 21:15. The whole experience lasts roughly six hours from door to door, leaving the next morning free for the souks, the gardens or another excursion from the city.
