Overview
Finishing your stay in Fes and heading south next? Rather than doubling back or taking a flight or train, this three-day route by Morocco Adventure Travel turns the journey to Marrakech into a desert adventure. It crosses the Middle Atlas, reaches the Sahara at Merzouga and climbs over the High Atlas before dropping you at your hotel in Marrakech, with no backtracking.
Day one is the longest, about 470 km. You leave Fes early and drive through Ifrane, at around 1,650 m, and the cedar forest near Azrou, where Barbary macaques often sit by the roadside. After lunch in Midelt, the road crosses the high plateau and follows the Ziz Gorges and the Ziz Valley via Erfoud to Merzouga. A camel carries you into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset for dinner and a night in a desert camp.
On day two you watch the sunrise, ride back for breakfast and continue via Tinghir to the Todra Gorge for a walk between its cliffs, ending the day in the Dades Valley among red rock formations. The last day follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Kelaat M’Gouna, Skoura and Ouarzazate, stops at the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Benhaddou and crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m.
Expect long hours in the vehicle, rewarded by constantly changing landscapes. Starting in Marrakech instead? Our three-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour is the round-trip version.
