Overview
Only 40 km south-west of Marrakech, the Agafay feels a long way from the bustle of the medina. Instead of sand dunes you find a rolling plateau of ochre and beige hills covered in small stones, with the peaks of the High Atlas on the horizon and the lake of Lalla Takerkoust glinting in the distance. Morocco Adventure Travel brings you here in the late afternoon, just as the heat fades and the light turns warm.
After a drive of about 45 minutes from your hotel or riad, you meet the camel handlers at the camp and head out on a ride of roughly one hour across the hills, with a stop at a viewpoint to photograph the sun going down. Back at camp, a pot of mint tea and a few snacks are ready while the sky changes colour.
Dinner is served in the camp’s dining tent, or outdoors when the weather allows: a spread of Moroccan salads, a slow-cooked tagine and something sweet to finish. Then the musicians take over around the fire with drums, Berber songs and folk dances, and nobody minds if you get up and join them. Our team drives you back to your door afterwards.
This is an easy-going evening for couples, friends and families, and a good way to open or close a stay in Marrakech. If tall golden dunes and a night under the stars are what you are after, our two-day Zagora desert trip is the better fit.

Itinerary

1
15:00 · Pick-up in Marrakech
Your driver collects you from your hotel or riad. If your riad sits in a lane cars cannot reach, we meet you at the nearest square or gate and confirm the spot on WhatsApp. The time moves with the seasons so that the ride matches the sunset: earlier in winter, later in summer. From the city you cross the flat Haouz plain towards the south-west.

15:45 · Arrival at camp and camel briefing
After about 45 minutes on the road you reach the camp on the Agafay plateau. The camel handler introduces you to the animals, explains how to mount and dismount safely and helps everyone get comfortable in the saddle. It is a short, relaxed briefing with no experience needed, and children ride together with an adult, so families can set off as one group.

16:00 · Sunset camel ride
The caravan sets off across the stony hills for a ride of roughly one hour. The pace is slow and steady, leaving plenty of time to look around at the bare ridges, the far-off Atlas peaks and the lake. Halfway along you stop at a viewpoint for photos while the low sun turns the whole plateau gold, before riding back to camp.

17:30 · Mint tea and free time
Back at camp, sweet mint tea and a few snacks are waiting. This is a quiet moment to sit on the cushions, take a few more pictures as the sky changes from orange to deep blue, or simply chat with the camp team. Many evenings the campfire is lit around this time, and the temperature drops quickly once the sun has gone.

18:00 · Dinner and live show
Dinner is served in the dining tent or under the open sky if the weather is mild: fresh Moroccan salads, a tagine cooked slowly over the coals, then fruit or pastries, with water on the table. From around 19:15 the musicians gather by the fire for a show of Moroccan and Berber rhythms, drums and folk dances. Guests are welcome to clap along or join the circle.

20:30 · Return to Marrakech
When the music winds down, you climb back into the air-conditioned vehicle for the drive across the plain to Marrakech. The ride home takes about 45 minutes and you are dropped at your hotel or riad at around 21:15, which still leaves time for a late stroll through the lit-up city if you have any energy left after such a full evening.
