Overview
Short on time but keen to sleep in the desert? This two-day trip from Marrakech reaches the dunes near Zagora, around 360 km to the south-east, and brings you back the following evening. Along the way you cross two mountain ranges and some of the most striking scenery in southern Morocco.
The first morning takes you over the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m and down to Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar, for a visit. After a lunch stop around Ouarzazate, the road climbs again over the Anti-Atlas at the Tizi n’Tinififft and descends into the Draa Valley, a long ribbon of date-palm oases running through Agdz towards Zagora. There you meet your camels and ride for about an hour to a Berber camp, where dinner is served and you spend the night in a tent.
Next morning you watch the sun come up over the sand, have breakfast at the camp and ride back to the vehicle before the drive home via Ouarzazate and the High Atlas.
Be aware that the dunes at Zagora are lower and more scattered than the great sand sea of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. If tall dunes are the main reason for your trip, Morocco Adventure Travel recommends our three-day Merzouga tour instead. For a quick taste of the Sahara on a tight schedule, though, Zagora works very well.

Day 2: Zagora – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
Get up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, one of the quietest moments of the trip. After breakfast at the camp, you ride your camel back to the vehicle for the return journey. The drive retraces the route through Ouarzazate and over the High Atlas, with rest stops along the way so you can stretch your legs and have lunch.
