Overview
About 150 km north-east of Marrakech, in the Azilal province, the Ouzoud river throws itself over a cliff in several tiers, dropping roughly 110 m into a gorge of red rock. They are the highest waterfalls in Morocco, set in the foothills of the Middle Atlas, and they make a refreshing change from the city on a hot day.
The drive takes two and a half to three hours each way, crossing the Tadla plain and passing small Berber villages. From the village of Tanaghmeilt at the top, a path winds down for 20 to 30 minutes through olive groves and past old water mills to the foot of the falls. Barbary macaques live in the trees along the gorge; enjoy watching them, but do not feed them.
At the bottom you can take one of the little boats out towards the spray for a small fee paid on the spot, then have lunch on a terrace above the river, where tagines are cooked over charcoal. The way back up follows the opposite side of the gorge, so you see the falls from new angles. Local guides wait on site if you would like commentary, also paid locally.
The water is at its strongest in spring after winter rain and snowmelt, though the falls still impress in late summer. If you prefer a shorter drive, Morocco Adventure Travel also runs a day trip to the Ourika Valley.

Itinerary

1
08:00 · Pick-up in Marrakech
Your driver meets you at your hotel or riad in an air-conditioned minibus. For riads that cars cannot reach, the nearest accessible meeting point is confirmed on WhatsApp the evening before. You head north-east across the Haouz and Tadla plains, past farmland and small Berber villages, with a short coffee stop on the way to break up the long journey north.

2
11:00 · Arrival at Ouzoud
You arrive in Tanaghmeilt, the village perched above the falls. Before you start walking, take a moment at the viewpoints to look down on the river as it pours over the cliff edge in a series of tiers. Your driver points out the paths and the meeting point, and local guides are available here if you want one, paid on site.

11:15 · Walk down to the falls
The trail drops for 20 to 30 minutes through olive groves and past the old water mills that once ground the valley's grain and olives. The steps can be uneven and slippery near the water, so take your time. Keep an eye on the trees: troops of Barbary macaques live along the gorge and often come close, but please keep your food out of sight.

12:30 · Boat ride and lunch
At the base of the falls you can board a small boat that edges out towards the spray, for a small fee paid locally. Then sit down for lunch at one of the terrace restaurants beside the river, where tagines are grilled over charcoal and you can watch the water thundering down. There is plenty of time for photos from below.

14:30 · Walk back up the gorge
The return climb follows the opposite bank of the gorge, opening up different viewpoints over the cascades as you go. In total, the walk down and back up adds up to about an hour of moderate walking. At the top you have some free time to rest, have a drink and take a last look at the falls before meeting the driver for departure.

15:30 · Return to Marrakech
You leave Ouzoud in the mid-afternoon and drive back across the plains to the city. The journey takes around two and a half to three hours, and you are dropped at your hotel or riad between about 18:00 and 18:30, in good time for a relaxed evening and dinner in Marrakech after a full but unhurried day out in nature.
