Overview
The Ourika Valley is the quickest way to swap the red walls of Marrakech for mountain scenery. Within an hour of leaving the city, the road follows the Ourika river off the Haouz plain and into a green valley of walnut trees, stepped fields and adobe hamlets, ending at Setti Fatma, the last village on the tarmac at roughly 1,500 m.
Along the way Morocco Adventure Travel stops at a family home in the lower valley, where you are welcomed with mint tea, bread and local olive oil and learn how a rural Berber house is built and lived in. Next comes a women’s cooperative producing argan oil by hand; you can watch the nuts being cracked and ground and taste amlou, the argan and almond spread. There is no pressure to buy.
In Setti Fatma a local mountain guide takes you up to the first of the valley’s seven waterfalls. The path takes 30 to 45 minutes each way and crosses small bridges and the river itself, with a few rocky sections where you use your hands. Cafés beside the pools serve drinks, and if you would rather skip the walk you can wait there instead.
Lunch is at a riverside restaurant before the drive back. It is a relaxed day that suits families and anyone short on time; for higher villages and rougher trails, look at our Imlil and Three Valleys day trip.

Itinerary

1
09:00 · Pick-up in Marrakech
An air-conditioned minibus picks you up at your hotel or riad. For riads tucked away in lanes without car access, we wait at the closest gate or square and send you the exact location on WhatsApp beforehand. You leave the city heading south, and within minutes the palm groves and farmland of the plain open up ahead of the Atlas.

09:45 · Visit to a Berber house
In the lower part of the valley you are invited into a family home for mint tea, freshly baked bread and local olive oil. Your hosts explain how a traditional rural house is built and how each part of it is used by the family through the seasons. It is a warm, informal introduction to everyday life in the mountains, and a good moment to ask questions about the valley and its villages.

10:30 · Argan oil cooperative
The next stop is a cooperative run by local women, who demonstrate how argan nuts are cracked between stones and ground by hand to produce the precious oil. You can taste amlou, a rich spread made from argan oil and almonds, and browse the oils and products made on site. Buying anything is entirely optional and nobody will push you to.

11:15 · Waterfall walk in Setti Fatma
At the end of the road you meet your local mountain guide and set off for the first waterfall. The trail takes 30 to 45 minutes each way, crossing small bridges and the river and climbing over a few boulders, so shoes with good grip help. If you prefer to stay low, the cafés by the water are a pleasant place to wait.

5
13:30 · Lunch by the river
Back in the village, lunch is served at a restaurant on the riverbank, with the sound of the water close by. Lunch is paid on the spot, so bring some cash in dirhams. Afterwards you have free time to wander around Setti Fatma at your own pace or simply relax by the river with a drink before the drive back down the valley.

15:30 · Return to Marrakech
In the mid-afternoon you leave the valley behind and follow the river back down towards the plain. The drive takes about an hour and a half, and you are dropped at your hotel or riad at around 17:00, leaving the evening free for dinner in the city, a visit to Jemaa el-Fna square or a rest before your next excursion.
