Overview

Ouirgane is one of the greenest corners of the High Atlas, a valley about 60 km south of Marrakech on the road that climbs towards the Tizi n’Test pass. Juniper and pine forests cover the slopes, villages built of red earth cling to the hillsides and a mountain lake sits at the bottom of it all. This private day with Morocco Adventure Travel combines time on that water with a gentle walk through the valley.

The drive takes you through the towns of Tahannaout and Asni, with a stop for photos of the mountains. At the lake you are given a kayak, a paddle and a life jacket, plus a short briefing. The water is calm, so no experience is required for the hour or so you spend paddling between the surrounding peaks.

Back on dry land, your local guide leads a walk through Berber villages, terraced gardens and olive groves along the Nfis river, with a stop at the traditional salt pans of Ouirgane. There is time for lunch in the village at your own expense and a final glass of mint tea before the return drive.

Because the trip is private, the vehicle, guide and pace are yours alone. Pricing is simple: €110 for one traveller, with each additional person adding just €10, so two people pay €120 and four people pay €140 in total.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    08:30 · Pick-up in Marrakech

Your private driver and guide collect you from your hotel or riad. If you are staying deep in the medina where cars cannot pass, we meet at the nearest square or gate and confirm the details on WhatsApp. You then head south across the Haouz plain, watching the Atlas grow closer as the flat farmland gives way to the first foothills.

  2. 2

09:30 · Asni and Atlas viewpoints

After passing through Tahannaout, the road winds up into the mountains around Asni. Your driver pulls over at a viewpoint for photos of the valley and its villages, a good chance to stretch your legs and get your bearings before you reach Ouirgane. Your guide uses the stop to point out the peaks and explain how life works in these high farming communities.

  3. 3

10:15 · Kayaking on Ouirgane lake

At the lakeshore you are fitted with a life jacket and handed a kayak and paddle, followed by a short safety briefing. Then you spend about an hour on calm water, gliding past wooded slopes with the mountains reflected around you. Children paddle together with an adult. If weather or the lake level rules out kayaking, we replace it with a longer walk.

  4. 4

    11:45 · Ouirgane discovery walk

Your guide leads you on foot through the villages of the valley, past terraced gardens and olive groves that line the Nfis river. Along the way you learn how families farm these slopes, and you stop at the traditional salt pans, one of the valley's most unusual sights. The walk is easy and suits most ages, with plenty of time for questions.

  5. 5

13:30 · Lunch and mint tea in the valley

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant in Ouirgane and paid on the spot, so you can order what you like. Afterwards there is free time to relax in the valley with a mint tea, enjoy the fresh mountain air and the quiet, or take a few more photos before the journey back. Remember to bring some dirhams in cash for this part of the day.

  6. 6

    16:00 · Return to Marrakech

In the late afternoon you climb back into the private vehicle and retrace the mountain road down to the plain. The drive takes roughly an hour and a half, and you are dropped at your hotel or riad in Marrakech at around 17:30, with the evening free to enjoy the city, a hammam or a rooftop dinner in the medina.
