Overview

Some 190 km west of Marrakech, roughly three hours by road, Essaouira greets you with sea wind, whitewashed walls and a harbour full of blue wooden boats. Its walled medina was planned in the 18th century for Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah with the help of a French engineer, and it has been listed by UNESCO since 2001. This day trip by Morocco Adventure Travel gives you the transport and the time; how you spend it is up to you.

The road crosses the flat Chiadma plains, dotted with argan trees, and stops at a women’s cooperative where the oil and cosmetics are still made by hand. Keep an eye out for goats perched in the branches. Many have been placed there by herders, who will ask for a tip if you take pictures, so the stop is optional.

In Essaouira you have about five hours on your own. Walk the Skala de la Ville sea bastion with its row of old cannons, browse the thuya-wood workshops and art galleries, and watch the fishermen mending nets in the port. For lunch, pick your fish at the grills near the harbour, agreeing on the price per kilo before it is cooked. South of the medina, a long sandy beach draws walkers and kitesurfers.

There is no guide in town on this trip, but we can arrange a local one for an extra fee. If you would rather spend a similar day inland, our Ouzoud Waterfalls trip is a good alternative.

  • Fresh fish grilled to order by the harbour for lunch
  • Hotel or riad pick-up and drop-off in Marrakech

Itinerary

  1. 1

    08:00 · Pick-up in Marrakech

Your driver collects you at your hotel or riad in an air-conditioned minibus. If you are staying where cars cannot reach, we meet at the nearest accessible point and confirm it on WhatsApp. The road heads west out of the city across wide, open plains, and the landscape slowly changes as you approach the coast and the first argan trees appear.

  2. 2

09:30 · Coffee break and argan cooperative

After a short coffee stop you visit a cooperative run by local women, who produce argan oil and cosmetics the traditional way. You can watch the process, ask questions and buy if you wish. On this stretch of road you may also see goats balanced in the argan trees; photos with them usually mean a tip for the herder, so the stop is up to you.

  3. 3

    11:00 · Arrival in Essaouira

You reach the coast in the late morning. Before you set off on your own, the driver shows you the meeting point for the return and suggests an easy route through the old town and down to the port, so you can make the most of your time. Essaouira is compact and flat, which makes it very simple to explore on foot without getting lost.

  4. 4

11:15 · Free time in the medina and port

The next hours are yours. Climb the Skala de la Ville for sea views over the cannons, wander past the thuya-wood workshops and small galleries, then head to the harbour to see the blue boats and the fishermen at work on their nets. Have lunch wherever you fancy, perhaps grilled fish by the port, and save time for a walk on the beach.

  5. 5

    16:00 · Departure from Essaouira

In the late afternoon you meet the driver at the agreed point and leave the coast behind. Remember that Essaouira is usually cooler and windier than Marrakech, so a light layer is useful on the seafront right up to departure. The return journey follows the same road east across the plains, with a short break on the way to stretch your legs.

  6. 6

    19:00 · Drop-off in Marrakech

You arrive back in Marrakech in the early evening and are dropped at your hotel or riad. It is a long but easy day with no strenuous walking, and you still have time to head out for dinner in the medina. Families, couples and older travellers all find this one of the gentlest full-day trips you can take from the city.
