Overview
Jebel Toubkal rises to 4,167 m, the highest point in North Africa and the crown of the High Atlas. In summer the standard southern route needs no technical climbing, yet it is long and reaches genuine altitude, so this two-day ascent is designed for fit hikers who are comfortable with full days on the trail.
It all starts with an 08:00 pick-up in Marrakech and a drive of about 1h30 to Imlil (1,740 m), where you meet your certified mountain guide and the muleteer. A guide is compulsory inside Toubkal National Park, and the mule carries the heavy bags so you only need a daypack. Day one is a steady 5–6 hour climb with around 1,450 m of ascent: through walnut groves to Aroumd village, across the flood plain and up the Mizane valley past the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (2,350 m), to the refuge at about 3,200 m for dinner and a night in a shared dormitory.
Summit day begins in the dark. A 3–4 hour climb over scree and a rocky ridge brings you to the metal tripod that marks the top, ideally around sunrise. When the air is clear, the view sweeps across the High Atlas and south towards the Anti-Atlas and the edge of the Sahara. You then descend to the refuge for lunch and carry on down to Imlil, before the drive back to Marrakech in the evening.
Groups are capped at 10 trekkers, with guiding in English, French or Spanish.
