Overview

The Palmeraie is a vast palm grove on the northern edge of Marrakech, criss-crossed by sandy tracks and dry riverbeds and dotted with small earth-built hamlets. It lies only 20–30 minutes from the medina, which makes it the easiest place to trade city lanes for open ground without a long drive.

After hotel pick-up and the short transfer, you gear up at the base camp with a helmet, goggles and a chèche scarf. A safety briefing and a practice lap come next, then you set off behind your guide for about an hour and a half of quad biking through the palms and across stony plains. The quads are automatic, so no previous experience or driving licence is needed, and the guide sets a pace that suits the whole group.

Along the way you pull up at a family home in one of the hamlets for mint tea, bread and olive oil. Then it is time to slow right down: a cameleer leads you on a calm 45–60 minute camel ride among the palm trees. Dressing up in traditional Berber clothes for photos is optional, and the afternoon session brings softer light for pictures.

Choose a morning departure (09:00) or an afternoon one (around 14:00). Groups are limited to 16 and the guide speaks English, French or Spanish. If you are after a more desert-like landscape, compare this half day with our Agafay desert experiences.

  • Mint tea, bread and olive oil in a Berber family home

Itinerary

  1. 1

    09:00 · Hotel pick-up

Your driver collects you from your hotel or, if your riad is inside the medina, from the nearest point a car can reach, which we confirm the day before. It is then a 20–30 minute drive to the Palmeraie base camp on the northern edge of the city. Prefer a slower start to the day? The afternoon session leaves at around 14:00 instead.

  2. 2

    09:30 · Briefing and gear

At the base camp you are fitted with a helmet, goggles and a chèche, the traditional scarf that keeps dust and sun off your face. Your guide runs through the controls and the safety rules, then you take a short practice lap to get comfortable before heading out onto the tracks. The quads are automatic, so the basics take only a few minutes.

  3. 3

    09:45 · Quad bike ride

Follow your guide for about an hour and a half along dirt tracks, through the palm grove and over open, stony plains. The pace is adapted to the group, so complete beginners and more confident riders alike can enjoy the ride. Quads are either one per person or shared by two, and there are pauses for photos among the palms.

  4. 4

    10:30 · Berber tea break

During the quad session you stop at a family home in a Palmeraie hamlet for mint tea served with bread and olive oil. It is a welcome chance to stretch your legs, shake off some dust and get a glimpse of everyday life in the earth-built villages just outside the city, before climbing back on your quad for the rest of the loop.

  5. 5

    11:15 · Camel ride

Time to swap engines for camels. A cameleer leads you on a relaxed 45–60 minute ride through the palms, an altogether gentler way to take in the scenery after the buzz of the quads. There is plenty of time for photos, and you can try on traditional Berber clothing if you like, which makes for great pictures among the palm trees.

  6. 6

    12:30 · Return to Marrakech

After the camel ride, your driver takes you back to your hotel or riad in Marrakech, arriving around midday with the afternoon free. If you chose the afternoon departure instead, the same programme simply runs from around 14:00, with the camel ride in the softer light of late afternoon. After heavy rain, the route may be adapted or the tour rescheduled.
