Overview

Getting up before dawn is a small price to pay for this. A driver collects you from your hotel or riad in Marrakech or the Palmeraie and drives you 30–45 minutes into the countryside, where the crew is already preparing the balloon as the sky starts to lighten.

After tea, a light snack and a safety briefing from your licensed pilot, you climb into the basket and lift off for roughly an hour in the air. The balloon drifts with the wind over farmland, palm groves, dry riverbeds and small earth-built villages, and on clear mornings the snow-capped High Atlas catches the first light along the horizon. The pilot changes height throughout the flight, from just above the fields to several hundred metres, and because the route follows the wind, no two flights are quite the same.

Once you are back on the ground, breakfast is waiting in a Berber tent: msemen and baghrir pancakes, amlou (an almond and argan spread), honey, olive oil, bread, eggs, fresh juice and mint tea. You also receive a flight certificate before the drive back to Marrakech, where you arrive mid-morning with the rest of the day ahead.

Groups are capped at 16 passengers, flight insurance is included, and guiding is available in English, French or Spanish. To add some time on the ground, combine it with our Palmeraie quad and camel ride.

  • Licensed pilot, ground crew and full safety briefing

  • Flight insurance included

Itinerary

  1. 1

    05:30 · Pick-up in Marrakech

Your driver collects you from your hotel, or from the closest point a car can reach if your riad is deep in the medina; we confirm the spot the day before. Pick-up usually falls between 05:00 and 06:30 depending on the season and sunrise, and the drive to the launch site takes 30–45 minutes. Dress in layers, as the early hours can be cold.

  2. 2

    06:15 · Launch site

Warm up with tea and a light snack while the crew inflates the balloon in the half-light, a spectacle in itself. Your pilot then gives a full safety briefing, covering how to stand in the basket during the flight and the position to hold for landing, and answers any questions before everyone climbs aboard for take-off as the sky brightens.

  3. 3

    06:45 · Sunrise flight

Lift off for around an hour in the air as the sun rises over the plains. Below you drift fields, palm groves, dry riverbeds and earth-built villages, while on clear mornings the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas light up in the distance. Your pilot varies the altitude from just above the fields to several hundred metres, and every flight follows the wind.

  4. 4

08:00 · Landing and Berber breakfast

After touchdown, you are taken to a Berber tent for a traditional breakfast: msemen and baghrir pancakes, amlou made from almonds and argan oil, honey, olive oil, bread, eggs, fresh juice and plenty of mint tea. Before leaving, your pilot presents each passenger with a flight certificate as a souvenir of the morning, and there is time to relax and share photos.

  5. 5

    09:30 · Return to Marrakech

The driver takes you back to your hotel or riad, arriving in Marrakech by mid-morning. With the excursion over so early, you still have the whole day free to explore the city, relax by the pool or add another activity, such as a medina walk or an afternoon quad and camel ride in the Palmeraie. Just ask our team to combine them.
