Overview

This private ten-day loop from Marrakech is made for travellers who want the full picture of Morocco in a single trip: High Atlas passes, southern kasbahs, Saharan dunes, imperial medinas, the blue town of Chefchaouen and the Atlantic cities. You travel the whole way in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver, staying in riads, hotels, a kasbah hotel and a desert camp.

From Marrakech the road climbs over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) to the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Benhaddou, then runs past Ouarzazate along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley. Next you walk between the sheer walls of the Todra Gorge and reach Merzouga in time to ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes, some of which rise to around 150 m, before a night in a desert camp.

After sunrise over the sand, you head north through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the Middle Atlas cedar forests to Fes, where a licensed guide leads you through Fes el-Bali. Then come the blue lanes of Chefchaouen in the Rif foothills, the Kasbah of the Udayas and Hassan Tower in Rabat, and the Hassan II Mosque and Corniche in Casablanca, before a guided afternoon in the Marrakech medina.

Driving days run 6–9 hours with regular stops. As the tour is private, nights can be extended and the route adjusted to suit you.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech

Your driver meets you at Marrakech Menara Airport and transfers you to your riad; share your flight details when booking so the pick-up matches your landing time. Depending on when you arrive, you may have time for a first evening stroll to Jemaa el-Fnaa to soak up the atmosphere of the square before the journey begins the next morning. Overnight in Marrakech.

  2. 2

    Day 2: Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Ait Benhaddou – Dades Valley

Leave Marrakech and climb into the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. On the southern side you visit the fortified ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before continuing past Ouarzazate along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. The day ends in the Dades Valley, where dinner is included. Overnight in the Dades Valley.

  3. 3

Day 3: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga

Drive to the Todra Gorge and walk between its towering rock walls, one of the highlights of the southern route. From there the road continues via Erfoud to Merzouga, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, some of which reach about 150 m. At sunset you ride a camel into the sand to reach your desert camp, where dinner is served. Overnight in a desert camp in Merzouga.

  4. 4

    Day 4: Merzouga – Midelt – Ifrane – Fes

Wake early to watch the sun rise over the dunes, one of the great moments of the trip. Afterwards you set off north through the Ziz Valley and the town of Midelt, then across the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas towards Fes. This is one of the longer days on the road, around 8–9 hours including regular stops. Overnight in Fes.

  5. 5

Day 5: Fes – Guided Tour of Fes el-Bali

A licensed local guide leads you through the UNESCO-listed medina of Fes el-Bali for a half-day visit, taking in the Bou Inania Madrasa, the gates of Al-Qarawiyyin, the lively souks and the Chouara tannery with its stone dye vats. The afternoon is free to explore further, rest in your riad or browse for crafts at your own pace. Overnight in Fes.

  6. 6

    Day 6: Fes – Chefchaouen

A drive of about four hours through the Rif foothills brings you to Chefchaouen, the famous blue town of northern Morocco. Spend a slow, relaxed afternoon wandering the blue-washed lanes of its medina at your own pace, then walk up to the Spanish Mosque on the hillside for sunset views over the town and the surrounding mountains. Overnight in Chefchaouen.

  7. 7

    Day 7: Chefchaouen – Rabat

Enjoy a final morning in Chefchaouen, perhaps with a coffee in the main square, before a drive of about four hours to Rabat, Morocco's capital. In the late afternoon you visit the Kasbah of the Udayas, perched above the river mouth, and the Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret that stands at the centre of the city's historic esplanade. Overnight in Rabat.

  8. 8

    Day 8: Rabat – Casablanca

Start the day at the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, beside the Hassan Tower, then drive about 1h15 south to Casablanca, Morocco's largest city. Here you enjoy a guided visit of the Hassan II Mosque, set right at the edge of the Atlantic, followed by a walk along the Corniche, the city's seafront promenade. The mosque ticket is paid on site. Overnight in Casablanca.

  9. 9

    Day 9: Casablanca – Marrakech

A drive of around three hours brings you back to Marrakech, where the loop began. In the afternoon a licensed local guide shows you the highlights of the medina, including the Bahia Palace and the souks, a fitting finale to your journey around Morocco. The evening is free for a farewell dinner of your choice on or around Jemaa el-Fnaa. Overnight in Marrakech.

  10. 10

    Day 10: Departure from Marrakech

Depending on your flight time, enjoy a little free time for last-minute shopping in the souks or a final mint tea on a riad terrace. Your driver then transfers you to Marrakech Menara Airport for your departure, bringing your ten-day private journey across Morocco to a close. If you wish to stay longer, our team can arrange extra nights in Marrakech.
