Overview

As the sun goes down, Jemaa el-Fnaa fills with smoke, music and long rows of food stalls. This evening walk with a local food guide shows you how to eat your way through it properly, with more than ten tastings spread over three and a half hours. Come hungry: for most guests, the tour easily takes the place of dinner.

The menu covers the great classics of Marrakech street food. You begin with harira soup and msemen flatbread at a long-standing family stall, with snail soup on offer for the curious, then follow the lanes around Mouassine and Rahba Kedima to taste tanjia and mechoui, the city’s celebrated slow-cooked lamb dishes. Your guide explains how each one is prepared, and why it matters so much to Marrakchis.

Back on the square, grilled brochettes, salads and olives arrive while musicians and storytellers perform around the stalls. The evening closes on a terrace above Jemaa el-Fnaa with Moroccan pastries and a glass of mint tea.

Along the way you also pick up the practical side of street food: local table manners, how to order, and how to choose stalls so you can keep eating safely on your own. Groups are capped at 10 people, and the tour runs in English, French or Spanish. To cook these flavours yourself, look at our Marrakech cooking class.

Itinerary

  1. 1

18:00 · Meet near the Koutoubia

Meet your guide and the rest of the group at the entrance to the Koutoubia gardens on Avenue Mohammed V. Together you stroll towards Jemaa el-Fnaa just as the stalls are being lit and the square slips into its evening rhythm. The start time can move by about 30 minutes with the season, and during Ramadan it follows the breaking of the fast.

  2. 2

    18:20 · Soups and flatbreads

The first stop is a long-established family stall serving harira, the hearty tomato and lentil soup that Moroccans love, with warm msemen flatbread on the side. Feeling adventurous? Snail soup is on offer as an optional extra, and your guide explains how locals eat it. It is a gentle, warming start that sets the tone for the rest of the evening ahead.

  3. 3

    19:00 · Tanjia and mechoui

Next, you head into the lanes near the souks, around Mouassine and Rahba Kedima, for two signature Marrakech dishes: tanjia and mechoui. Between bites, your guide describes how each one is slowly cooked and what makes a good one, so you know exactly what to look for when you order them later in your trip. These quieter lanes are a side of the medina few visitors see at night.

  4. 4

    19:50 · Grills on Jemaa el-Fnaa

Back on the main square, take a seat for grilled brochettes, fresh salads and olives while musicians and storytellers entertain the crowds around you. This is the liveliest moment of the evening, and your guide helps you navigate the stalls, explains local table manners and shares tips on how to choose a good stall when you come back on your own.

  5. 5

20:40 · Sweets and mint tea

The tour ends on a terrace overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa, with a plate of Moroccan pastries and a glass of mint tea. It is a fine spot to watch the square from above as the evening unfolds, and to ask your guide for any last recommendations before you head off for the night, well fed and with a few new favourite dishes.
