Overview

Casablanca is often treated as a place to pass through, yet a few well-planned hours reveal a city full of character. This private tour by Morocco Adventure Travel pairs your own driver with a licensed local guide, so the morning runs at your pace and fits around a train, a flight or a cruise stop.

The highlight is the Hassan II Mosque, finished in 1993 and partly built out over the Atlantic, with a minaret that rises about 210 m. Official guided visits of the prayer hall, the ablution rooms and the hammam run at fixed times outside prayer hours and last around 45 minutes; your guide plans the day around them and explains the craftsmanship, from carved cedar and marble to stucco and zellige tilework.

From the mosque you follow the ocean along the Corniche to Ain Diab and the El Hank lighthouse, then move inland to the Habous quarter, a new medina built in the 1930s, where olive stalls, bookshops and pastry shops line the arcades. Nearby you pass the gates of the Royal Palace before reaching Mohammed V Square, framed by grand Mauresque public buildings, and the Art Deco streets of downtown. A short walk through the old medina near the port rounds off the tour.

Transport is in an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water is provided and the mosque ticket is paid on site. We collect you from your hotel, from Casa-Voyageurs or Casa-Port station, or from the cruise terminal.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    09:00 · Pick-up in Casablanca

Your driver and guide meet you at your hotel, at Casa-Voyageurs or Casa-Port train station, or at the cruise terminal, so let us have the address when you book. If you are arriving by ship or catching a flight later in the day, the start time can be moved to suit you. The private air-conditioned vehicle is yours for the whole morning.

  2. 2

    09:30 · Hassan II Mosque

You join an official guided visit of the prayer hall and the lower levels, including the ablution rooms and the hammam, which lasts around 45 minutes. Shoes come off inside and a bag is provided to carry them. Afterwards your guide walks you along the ocean-front esplanade and points out the fine details of the carved cedar, marble and zellige work.

  3. 3

10:45 · Corniche and Ain Diab

Leaving the mosque, you drive west along the Atlantic Corniche past the El Hank lighthouse towards the beach district of Ain Diab. There is a short stop by the ocean for photos and a breath of sea air, and your guide talks about how the city grew from a small port into Morocco's economic capital, its largest city and its busiest harbour.

  4. 4

11:15 · Habous quarter and Royal Palace gates

Next comes the Habous, a new medina designed in the 1930s with arcaded lanes, small souks, bookshops, olive stalls and pastry shops selling Moroccan sweets. It is a calm and pleasant place to stroll and a good spot to pick up a gift. Close by, you stop to see the ornate gates of the Royal Palace from outside, which is as far as visitors can go.

  5. 5

12:00 · Mohammed V Square and Art Deco downtown

In the city centre, your guide shows you Mohammed V Square, surrounded by grand civic buildings in the Mauresque style, and leads you through streets lined with Art Deco facades from the early 20th century. It is a side of Casablanca many visitors miss, and the stories behind the buildings bring the colonial era and the modern city to life.

  6. 6

    12:40 · Old medina and drop-off

The tour ends with a short walk through the old medina near the port, a compact maze of lanes and small shops very different from the boulevards outside its walls. Your driver then takes you back to your hotel, station or ship, arriving at around 13:00, which leaves the whole afternoon free for lunch, a rest or your onward journey.
